How to make your Facebook profile picture work for you

The devil is in the details they say, and this can not be more true about website design. One thing that drives me nuts about Facebook is the fact that the “profile picture” only supports JPEG format. That means you can’t upload a transparent PNG or GIF. My problem with facebook profile pictures is the fact that the light blue background can’t run through the background of your image unless you “PhotoShop” it into the background. Here is what I mean outlined in red:

The solution to this of course is to take a screen shot of that lovely blue background with the slightly darker line edge and “bake” it into your Facebook profile picture…  You can see a screen shot here of my Facebook page where I fixed the problem:

I’ve attached a PhotoShop file to this post that solves this problem. (note: I’ve noticed this visual “hack” doesn’t work on all browsers so test it a little before you say “job done”) But I must say my little hack sure makes things look better. You could experiment with making the blue bar a gradient or playing around with slight line there. Maybe make it bend! Enjoy!
